Challenges and opportunities for biodegradable (textile) fibers

  • Gerard Nijhoving

Polyester is the worlds most used material for our clothing. Millions of tons are produced each year of which close to nothing is recycled. Hundreds of thousands of tonnes end up in the open environment each year, where they accumulate. Synthetic textiles made from biopolymers offer great opportunities to reduce carbon emissions and microplastic pollution. This presentation first explains where biodegradable products make sense in general and why synthetic textiles like polyester fiber needs to be added to that list. Finally, the technical and business challenges and opportunities for a biodegradable synthetic textile fiber is elaborated.
