The Sustainable Materials Lab: Helping You Design the Future

Many brands want to switch to renewable or recycled materials when developing their next product, both to reduce their impacts and to align with consumer demands. But how can switching a material make a difference to the impact of a product, and how can we measure those impacts?

In this talk, you’ll hear about the latest advances in biobased, recycled content and mass-balanced approaches for material development. We’ll also dive into the methodology for creating Product Carbon Footprints to support companies in making informed choices.

Optimaliseren van extrusie meng kwaliteit doormiddel van stroming simulaties

Doorgaans worden kunststof profielen en buizen geproduceerd met enkelschroefsextruder. In de enkelschroefsextruder kunnen additieven gemengd worden, of het plastic wordt eerst gecompoundeerd in een dubbelschroefsextruder. Een dubbelschroefsextruder mengt veel beter dan een enkelschroefsextruder, maar is nadelig omdat het een extra verwerkingstap is. Daarom doet het Lectoraat Kunststoftechnologie onderzoek naar het optimaliseren van mengen met een enkelschroefsextruder. Het lectoraat heeft een methodiek ontwikkeld voor het simuleren van mengkwaliteit. Deze methodiek is gevalideerd doormiddel van extrusie experimenten. Met deze simulatie methode kan de mengkwaliteit van veel verschillende schroefgeometrieën met elkaar vergeleken worden om de optimale geometrie te vinden.

Flame retardants: A changing Landscape

Due to the growing health concerns regarding the toxicity of flame retardants in polymers in Europe and the Americas, Polymer Compounders Limited (PCL) investigated ways to develop a safer alternative. They achieved their goal by creating the Notoxicom® family of flame retardant materials. Notoxicom® B6000 (FR PC/ABS) and Notoxicom® S6000 (FR PC/ASA).
Notoxicom® is our registered tradename for specialist halogen and aryl phosphate ester free flame retardant polymers. These materials are unique because they retain industry-leading performance whilst being much less toxic to human health. Notoxicom® polymers can be used in many different applications, such as battery casings to state-of-the-art medical devices.

Team CORE is a student team from the Eindhoven University of Technology, focused on solving problems within the waste and chemical industry. During the two days of the Kunststoffen fair we are going to showcase the potential of student teams by live challenge solving. Throughout the fair itself multiple companies have challenged us with a problem from the plastic market and during this lecture we will summarize the most interesting solutions and explain the potential use of student teams.
