Biosourced plastics: hype or hope?

  • Prof. Jean-Marie Raquez
  • University of Mons/Laboratory of Polymeric and Composite Materials

Plastic materials are part of our everyday lives in various applications ranging from packaging to electronics. Indeed, plastics are extremely functional materials, lightweight and, in some cases, highly resistant to various chemical and biological attacks. In addition to their long persistence in natural conditions, plastics must also face up is related with the Paris agreement, i.e., the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by limiting the use of fossil resources, the main sourcing used to make our plastics. This lecture will aim to present the recent environmental solutions envisioned in plastic materials derived from biomass, commonly called bioplastics, through industrial perspectives.
