In our society the focus is on a ‘circular economy’ which implies for materials and products made thereof, recycling and preferably biobased. Confusion arises regarding the use of terms like biobased, biodegradable, biocompostable plastics. It is next to impossible to differentiate for the public at large including politicians and policy makers between the various statements made by producers of biobased/biocompostable plastics. Companies should take responsibily to ‘educate’ the consumers with respect to the end-of-life options of their products. However, some companies seem not to restrain themselves on some ‘greenwashing’ of their products. Striking examples will be presented.
